NO! You do not need any familiarity with horses; we encourage all experience levels to join the team. There are no tryouts to be on the team.  Anyone and everyone who wants to ride are encouraged to do so.  Even if you have never been on a horse in your life we encourage you to ride!  We try to group you in lessons with people that are at your same riding level.  All levels of riders will have plenty of opportunity to advance in their abilities.

The team offers two disciplines:  Western Horsemanship/Equitation or Hunt Seat (English) Equitation which includes classes on the flat (Walk, Trot, Canter) and Jumping.  We do not offer Saddle Seat, Dressage, Western Pleasure, etc.  Although you may prefer one of these other disciplines, we still encourage you to ride and try something new.

The team tries to keep costs as low as possible through fundraisers and other types of events, though most of the costs are covered by each individual member.  Ball State University does not contribute much in terms of finances because we are a sports club, not a varsity team.  The equestrian sport is not cheap, particularly for college students, but when you break the costs down it is considerably more affordable than compared to independent horse riding lessons.  We offer several different payment methods so that college students have the opportunity to experience the club and enjoy the horses. For more information check the membership page.

As a member of the club, riding or non-riding, you must follow the rules of the club and help with team functions and activities.

NO! BSET rides at two different privately owned barns. These barns supply the horses and tack needed for lessons and IHSA shows.  The only thing you need for lessons is a pair of boots with a heel and a pair of jeans.  If you do decide to show, you will need some type of show clothes, but if you do not have them we can try and find some that fit you. WE HAVE WAYS!

NO! You do not have to show in the IHSA to be on the BSET team, it is merely an extra activity we are involved in to compete against other schools.  Classes in IHSA range from the newest beginners to the most advanced.  We compete against other schools such as Purdue, Notre Dame, Indiana University, University of Illinois, and many more to earn individual points and team points.  As an individual, you have the opportunity to earn points to qualify to compete in Regional, Zone and National Events. These are great opportunities to meet people from other schools and challenge your self as a rider.  The show season lasts from August to April.  All the shows are planned around the college breaks and take place on Saturday and Sundays.  We have around 10 one day shows a season.

We have a regular monthly team meeting in  addition to your scheduled riding lesson.  **(See the calandar for date and time.)
